Dunn’s Daily upDates (April)

April 1 - Saturday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 49 of 200

Location: Boston Mass.
Temperature: 40 /65
Weather Conditions: Perfect.
Running Time: 4:31

Road Finds: I found something very important today. A renewed sense of why I'm doing what I do. There was a group of runners waiting at the finish line to welcome me on my first day. After I had spoken to the TV reporter about how running has been my salvation from alcohol abuse, one of the runners came up to me and told me what an inspiration I was.

It's good for me to be reminded of my "mission"...it's more than record setting, and media coverage, and sponsorship...it's about touching peoples' lives.

Comments: What an "opening day" in Boston for Mr. Marathon. I felt really comfortable running fabled Boston course...26.2 miles that I am intimately familiar with, having run it 26 days is a row back in '96. There were a lot of runners out today....hey, it's only 2 weeks 'til the 104th running, and the locals are getting ready. I had 2 running companions today. One from about mile 9 to mile 15, and one from mile 15 to mile 19. The 1st, preparing for her 1st marathon, and the other getting ready for his 4th Boston in the last 5 years.

I had a TV crew with me from about 21 to the finish....that was part of the reason for my "quick" time today....I always perform better for the camera.

And who says there's no such thing as a free lunch. I had one today, same as I will be for the next 16 days...compliments of The Back Bay Restaurant Group, and Papa Razzi's downtown Boston location. And you think that's good....after lunch, I was "chauffered" back to my car, compliments of Frank Najali, President of Boston Pain Management Consultants. This is also going to be a daily occurance......I felt like a rock star, or a foreign dignitary or some one important. So, all of these things happening on my first day here in Boston, made for a wonderful day.

April 2 - Sunday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 50 of 200

Location: Boston, Mass
Temperature: 43 / 66
Weather Conditions: Instant replay of yesterday....beautiful.
Running Time: 4:49

Road Finds: 57 cents. 1 quarter; 4 nickels and 12 pennies. A pretty good day. I experimented with stretching my hamstrings every time I bent over to pick up a coin....I think that's going to work out well.

Comments: Let me just say that I'm off to a great start here in Boston, and I'm looking forward to a good stay.

I'm picking up a few more "fans" as the weeks go by, and it's fun to communicate with them. So keep sendin' in those cards and letters....and emails.

April 3 - Monday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 51 of 200

Location: Bean Town
Temperature: 49 / 56
Weather Conditions: Overcast. Cool. Pleasant.
Running Time: 4:50

Road Finds: Ten cents.

Comments: I'm going to keep it brief today, because I have to take a nap so I can stay up late enough to watch the Gators wear out the Spartans, and become the 1st NCAA Champs of the 21st Century.

After 2 days of sunshine, minimal traffic, and lots of other runners to greet....I realized quickly that today is Monday. No sun; a gazillion automobiles and a scarcity of other runners out early on a weekday morning.

Sore quads today, but hey, I'm just getting back into the "groove", they'll get better in a few days.

I promise more extensive coverage tomorrow.

Go GATORS!!

April 4 - Tuesday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 52 of 200

Location: Hopkinton, MA
Temperature: 52 / 63
Weather Conditions: Cloudy, breezy and damp.
Running Time: 4:54

Road Finds: I spotted a couple of pennies today, but just didn't have the desire to stop....so much for the stretch the hamstrings theory.

Comments: My PR firm had two TV interviews scheduled for me today....one at 10:30 and the other at 11;30...both crews wanted me at the start line in Hopkinton. So today, I ran from start line to 1/2 way stripe in Wellesley, and back. All that wonderful down hill at the beginning of the course ain't so wonderful comin' back. Throw in a headwind, at times rather brisk, and I found myself late for my appointment....but only by 14 minutes. Both interviews went very well. One will "air" tonight at 6, and the other was the 1st segment of 4 different "on location" shoots that will be edited into a 4 or 5 minute "mini-feature" that will air on the Friday before the race, or on Monday the 17th which is race day. (Of course I had to do a little running for both of the crews....if you're doing a story on Mr. Marathon, there has to be footage of him/me running. But hey, that's why my sponsors pay me; it's part of the job.

I stayed up 'til 11:25 last night, watching the NCAA Final Game....remind me not to do that again. I paid for it today.

Tomorrow I will report on the logistics of staying 4 miles from the start line, on a point to point course, w/o my own "wheels". It's a story of Boston hospitality and what it means to have left a trail of good friends over the years.

gotta run....Jerry Dunn

April 5 - Wednesday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 53 of 200

Location: Boston, MA
Temperature: 38 / 58
Weather Conditions: Clear, crisp, and windy. Mostly a tailwind. "And my the wind always be at your back".
Running Time: 4:49

Road Finds: 12 cents....all in the first 7 miles....actually between mile 6 and 7. The dime had been in the road for quite some time..it's in bad shape.

Comments: Today's run was made much easier because of yesterday's run, and because I had a "deadline" to meet by mile 24, and because of the friendliness of another Boston runner.

Reasons: you may remember that yesterday I did an "out and back" from the start line, because of media committments...and that was tough doing those uphills into the wind. So today, I took great pleasure in knowing that I didn't have that daunting task to accomplish again.

The TV piece today was focused on the fact that I carry my SPRINT digital phone with me, and use it for business and pleasure while I'm "at the office". the reason for wanting to meet me at mile 24 was so that I would be on a different section of the course, (tomorrow's shoot will be on Heartbreak Hill).

My "company" for the day joined me at 18 and ran to about 23 with me. He is going to do the Boston, AND, is going to be in Nashville for the Country Music Marathon. Also, the folks at Active.com, my most recent sponsor affiliation, will be happy to know that he registered for Country Music, on line, at their site.

Physically I'm feeling as well as can be expected, given the masochistic way in which I am treating my body.....sore quads, a couple of new blisters, (underneath and surrounding old calloused skin....gross) and some minor discomfort in my low back.....but other than that, I'm feelin' pretty chipper.

More tomorrow.

Oops, almost forgot. A friend of my closed his e-mail to me yesterday with the following words:

Be yourself. Be courageous. Be persistent. Be a hero.

I liked it....thought you might too.

April 6 - Thursday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 54 of 200

Location: Boston, MA
Temperature: 34 / 43
Weather Conditions: Partly sunny and brisk. Slight breeze.
Running Time: 5:03

Road Finds: A banner day. Within the first 10 paces, in the dark, at 6 in the morning....I found a nickel. Total for the day....29 cents. One nickel, one dime and 14 pennies. A lot of bending over, but given the way my back feels today....it was good to stop and stretch.

Comments: The old saying..."some days are better than others".....well, this was one of the "others". I woke up with low back pain again this morning; didn't want to get out there. But I knew that my buddy Gere would be here at 5:30 to get me, and I knew that I had a media commitment at mile 19 at 9 AM, so I forced myself out the door...ran a little hunched over for the 1st coupla miles; was only about 14 minutes tardy for the camera; walked a little bit more than usual; and ended up not feeling too bad. (OK, no more whining).

Ice and ibuprofen are the order of the day, and I'll see how I feel in the morning. I have another media "gig" tomorrow, and this one is at the finish line, so I guess I have no choice. The gray skies today didn't help....I do much better when the sun is shining.

***

April 7 - Friday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 55 of 200

Location: Boston, MA
Temperature: 40 / 61
Weather Conditions: Very nice day for running.
Running Time: 5:00

Road Finds: 31 cents and a young Japanese runner. 3 dimes in one location, and a penny in another.

Comments: The Japanese runner at mile 16. He had passed me just after 15 miles, I was walking at the time, just said "Hi" as he went by. At mile 16, I saw him again and he was reading a map. I asked him where he was headed and he told me "Copley Square." (For those of you who aren't familiar with the course....that's just past the finish line. We just kind of naturally started running the same pace, and through broken English, and much patience on his part, I determined that he had started in

Framingham, and was running to the finish line.

We had a great time for the next ten miles. At first he was a bit unsure that what I was telling him about running the course the past 6 days, and my plans to run it 10 more days, as part of my overall plan to run 200 in one year, but as we began to encounter people that recognized me from my TV appearances this week, he began to belief. He kept saying..."You very popular". Also today, I was scheduled to meet the crew from New England Sports Network at the finish line so they could shoot the last segment of the story they are doing on me. I phoned ahead to tell them I would have a "running companion" with me, and they thought that would add a nice touch to the story. Needless to say, he was excited about being on TV with such a very "popular" guy.

After we finished with the TV folks, I invited him to be my guest for lunch at Papa Razzi's, (the restaurant that is "hosting" me everyday while I'm here.)

We exchanged email addresses and vowed to stay in touch. His sister lives in Framingham; his brother-in-law is a physician at Harvard Medical School; his mother is a pianist; and his father is a conductor of a symphony orchestra. He is studying chemistry at the University back in his home country, and plans to become a physician. (I would tell you his name and his home city, but that info is in my fanny pack, and I'm too darn lazy to get up right now.

He's not aware how much he helped me today....my back is still a little sore, my quads were screaming at me today, and my "mo" was a little low.....so I savored the company and the cultural experience...and of course the fun of being "very popular".

When I asked him what he expected to run on Monday, he said..."2:45". After further questioning I found that this will be his 4th marathon, and his PR is currently 3:04, and that "I would LIKE to run a 2:45".

Oh yeah, one other part of our trek from Newton to downtown....well, 2 things actually...the first is going to sound stereotypically rude, but we stopped many places along the route to take photos....I loved it, and he promised to send me copies. The other "fun" thing was my daily stop at Steve's Beacon Street Gulf station. He and some of his employees are usually out pumping gas when I roll in, and they always holler and make a scene...."here comes superman....here's Jerry, right on time...da duh, da duh, da duh.

Of course this played right into the "you are very popular" theme of the day. Then, as is my habit also, we went inside the station where there are donuts waiting for me......he had one with me...and we were on our melly way.

So do you see why I love my job? some days it's just a hoot....besides the fact that I love to run.

April 8 - Saturday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 56 of 200

Location: Boston, MA
Temperature: 42 / 53
Weather Conditions: Just like opening day here in Boston.....beeeautiful.
Running Time: 4:50

Road Finds: 53 cents.....and another running companion.

Comments: Yesterday was fun, and I made a new acquaintance in the process, but today I made a new friend, in a much too short 12 miles.

I can only describe today as a "spritual high".

There are just too many pieces to the story to relate them all here. Suffice it to say that the only way this day could have been any better is if Elaine had surpassed me with a visit.

I guess to say we were sole/soul mates, would indicate what kind of day it was.

Physically: back is much better; blisters have begun to callus; lost one toe nail; quads are still tight, but loosen up after about 3 miles; the right arch that gave me so much grief in LV and LA, is a non-factor; knees are good; and my attitude is ....."I can do this".

At the 1/2 marathon mark tomorrow, I will be "over the hump" here in Boston.

Later....Mr. Marathon.

April 9 - Sunday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 57 of 200

Location: Boston, MA
Temperature: 54 / 39
Weather Conditions: Challenging: Gale force gusts, 45 degree angular rain, plummeting temps...enough said.
Running Time: 5:50

Road Finds: 1 cent...and 2 true friends.

Comments: During my 2AM bathroom break, I heard the wind howling, just as it had been when retired at 8 PM, and the rain was beating against the window. And when the alarm went off at 4:30 AM....same thing. For the first time here in Boston, I seriously considered taking a day off. Instead, I called Chris for his wake-up call to come get me.......I was committed.

During the first 9 miles I weathered 5 "cloudbursts" and constant wind, either out of the east and at my back, which actually was a hindrance, or from south to north across my path. During the cross winds I had to tilt my head to the right to diminish the pelting on my face. Fortunately during all this, I only had to chase my hat 1 time.

Mile 10 is where the 2 true friends enter the picture. By this time the rain has subsided and the temp has started to drop, but the companionship makes up for all the adversity of the day. These guys could have stayed in their vehicle and just "crewed" for me, but they had committed to run with me.....and that's what they did. God bless them.

One of them has not had time to train adequately, and we had to do a good bit of walking, in addition to his "slower" pace, which resulted in a 5:50 for the day.......SO WHAT! I had number 57 for the year, 295 lifetime, and 9 for Boston, behind me.

All things considered....I'd call it a good day. Plus, I KNOW tomorrow has to be better than this.

***

April 10 - Monday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 58 of 200

Location: Boston, MA
Temperature: 34 / 45
Weather Conditions: Sunny. Cool...borderline cold.
Running Time: 4:53

Road Finds: 19 cents and some "outside myself motivation".

The motivation came in a human package. Larry, the man who ran 6 or 7 miles with me last Thursday, and who I saw in passing on Saturday, met up with me at the foot of Heartbreak Hill and ran to the finish line with me. He was kind enough to walk with me when I need to walk, but cut me no slack as we ran. Not that he forced me to run 8's, or anything like that, but we did move along closer to 9's than to 11's which is about the pace I was running before he joined me. Nice Man.

Comments: The old saying...."be careful what you ask for, you may just get it" is coming into play. I asked for sponsors to pay me to advertise; I asked for media coverage in order to fulfill my obligations to my sponsors; and I asked to be known as Mr. Marathon....it's all happening, and I'm enjoying it.

Radio, TV, newspaper, limo service, complimentary food and on of the better downtown Boston eateries.....beats the heck out of Las Vegas in February.

Stay tuned, it's race week, and it's gonna get wild.

April 11 - Tuesday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 59 of 200
Location: Bean Town
Temperature: 30 / 43
Weather Conditions: Really quite nice...the sunrise was breathtaking; the air was crisp; it couldn't have been better.
Running Time: 4:56

Road Finds: 19 cents...and some give-aways. Today is the home opener for the Red Sox, and Fenway Park can be seen from the 25 mile mark of the marathon course. As I passed 25, and came into Kenmore Square, I found a whiffle ball in the street, (and of course I stopped to pick it up to add to the collection of other road finds) and then I spotted a brightly painted Nantucket Nectar Truck, with cases and cases of the stuff stacked up on the sidewalk. I stopped, said "what's the deal?" He said, "they're free, what flavor would you like?" I said "orange.....and by the way, I'm Mr. Marathon, and I don't currently have a "juice" sponsor, here's my card." He said, "great, I'm in marketing, give me a call, the number is on the label."

I haven't called yet, 'cause I figure he's still down there passing out juice, but you can be sure that I will call him tomorrow. Best thing about it....the juice is great.

Other than that, today was pretty uneventful. I ran the first 5 miles in 50 minutes flat...usually it's about 56 or 57, but there was no pit stop necessary today either.

I did one radio interview while on the run. I had no running companions today, so it was all "self motivation", and some of Elaine's RFM..(relentless forward motion), and I rolled in just under 5 again. Oh yeah, as I crossed the finish line I noticed that the scaffolding is going up for the clock, and the bridge, and the banners that will be stretched across the finish area.

Later. Jerry

April 13 - Thursday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 61 of 200
Location: Boston
Temperature: 34 /47
Weather Conditions: GREAT! A little chilly 'till the sun got up over the trees, and then it was "clear sailin'".
Running Time: 4:54

Road Finds: Believe it or not....day 13, yep, you guessed it 13 cents. I swear to God. And I didn't leave any "noticed" coins on the ground, just to make this happen. (Pretty exciting stuff, huh?)

Comments: I realized this morning as I was just getting started, and feeling much better than I did yesterday, that I had forgotten to do my Update yesterday. I decided that the reason may have been that yesterday was one of those kind of "blah" days....you know, the kind we all have every once in awhile...the kind we'd just as soon forget. Well, I did. I made it in 5:08, and didn't have much fun doing it. Plus, it was a gray day anyway.

Today was a three sixty from that.....Sunshine; an Associated Press photographer waiting at Wellsley to snap a few photos to go with the story that a reporter did yesterday; a surprise "call back" radio interview from WBMX, (which then had a number of motorists honking and waving as they listened "live"); a running companion from 24.5 to the finish, who just happened to be Dave McGillivray, the technical director of the Boston marathon, and someone who is as "crazy" as me....we had lunch and shared "war stories"; and then to top off the day, a photo shoot at Papa Razzi's, which is the restaurant that has hosted me for lunch and dinner every day.....Phew, quite a day. PLUS...the run went extremely well from a physical perspective.

Later.

April 14 - Friday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 62 of 200
Location: Bean Town
Temperature: 39 /55
Weather Conditions: Betty nice!
Running Time: 5:06

Road Finds: 11 cents; a golf ball; a very small yellow rubber ducky; and a card, with the same style and format of a baseball card, but of a Newton police officer. Quite a day.

Comments: The reason for my 5 + time today, was that at my 24 mile pit stop/aid station, which is the Beacon Street Gulf Station, where I always stop for a 1/4 of java and a donut before I head to the finish line, I had to say my "good-byes" to Steve and his crew. So I probably spent 7 or 8 minutes there instead of the usual 2 or 3. (If you're ever in Brookline, and need gas, go to Steve's station, and tell 'em...."Mr. Marathon sent you".

Today was good. What can I say, 3rd city...14th day, I mean it's my job, and some days it feels that way. I love what I'm doing, but even still, once in awhile, it's just an "I gotta get it dunn kind of day". The good thing is though, that Elaine arrives tonight....(I don't get to see her until I cross the finish line tomorrow), and that will definitely "pull" me along tomorrow.

Today was important in one regard....it was my 300th lifetime. (OK, OK, for all your "purists" out there, yes, many of those 300 were just like today...solo. But also like today, they were on a certified marathon course, and I DID run 26.2 miles).

An aside: I am personally acquainted with Norm Frank, Wally Herman and Don McNelly, who are currently numbers 1, 2, and 3, respectively, in the "most in a lifetime" category....Norm having surpassed 700, all of which ARE official races. And they know that I'm in a category of my own, not chasing their records, and they wish me well in what I'm doing.

April 15 & 16 - Saturday & Sunday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 63 & 64 of 200

Location: Bean Town
Temperature: 48/62
Weather Conditions: Saturday: sunny and breezy. Sunday: gentle rain 1st 2 hours; cloudy the rest of the day.
Running Time: 5:06

Road Finds: Saturday: 26 cents. Sunday: 1 cent.

Comments: Elaine was waiting at the finish line on Saturday morning, and that didn't cause me to run any faster, but it certainly gave me more motivation to complete the run. I was very happy to see her. It's been over 2 weeks....enough said.

We had lunch at Papa Razzi's; I did my sponsor duties at Active.com from 1 to 2:30, and at Endurox R4 from 2:30 to 4:00; Erin, Elaine's daughter, and her friend took us to dinner in the North End; and we were home by 8. This was quite a diversion from my normal routine of the last 14 days, but it had no adverse effects on my performance today. My favorite running partner accompanied me for the first 6 miles...that would be my wife, of course. At the end of the run, we once again took advantage of Papa Razzi's hospitality, and then moved on to the expo again. Today's excitement was a photo shoot for Active.com as I donned my new uniform. We did some fun shots at the finish line and some in the booth at the expo.

We got home by 6, and are going to get a good night's rest in preparation for tomorrow....my 17th and final day here in Beantown.

As I move toward a new identity...Mr. Marathon...I want to acknowledge the work of Waylen Bray, at http://scenicview.com. Waylen completely "remodeled" my site at the end of 1999, and made it what it is currently....awesome. I want to thank him for all the work, as well as for his personal support of my project.

I will probably not report tomorrow night, or Tuesday, (travel day)...but I will be back on Wednesday from the sacred Black Hills of my home.

***

April 17 - Monday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 65 of 200
Location: Boston
Temperature: 38/40
Weather Conditions: Cold, a head wind all the way and cloudy.
Running Time: 5:35

Road Finds: An all time record: $20.22. I found a $20.00 bill at mile 14. I thought about saying...."did anyone drop a 20, but then I thought, how dumb is that." I mean everyone is running, so whoever dropped it was somewhere down the road, so I just considered it my lucky day.

Comments: There's so much to say about race day.....I ran with Elaine, my friend Gere Monro, and his guide Chris. We stayed together the entire course. These are people that mean a lot to me, and we finished as a team.

the pre-race festivities in Hopkinton were fun. I did 2 live radio interviews, and one TV spot. We hung out at Jack's Barbershop, which is actually a meeting place for AA members and friends. We went to the Lion's Club pancake breakfast. And just had fun.

The live chat during the race when extremely well, and active.com has plans to do that again in all the races for the rest of the year.

As always, my wife Elaine was voted the best dressed runner in the field of 17,000. For this race she chose the purple with gold outfit that has won her the same award at many other events. (I may be able to run more marathons in a year than her, but she is always the more stylish).

All in all it was a great day.

I came away from Boston feeling much better that any of the previous 3 months/cities, and I'm looking forward to next weekend in Nashville, and the brand new Country Music Marathon.

So long for now.....pardner.

***

April 27 - Thursday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 66 of 200
Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Temperature: 50/68
Weather Conditions: Sunny skies, mild breeze at times and quite a pleasant change from the last time I ran.
Running Time: 5:00:33

Road Finds: 45 cents.

Comments: Elaine and I arrived last night, checked in our hotel, had a great dinner, and requested a wake up call at 4:15. We were met at Centennial Park by Harold and Paul. Harold had everything scheduled and organized to supply me with runners for the entire course, and to supply me with food and beverage. Elaine and Paul did the 1st 5 miles with me, and then I was passed on the Dave for 5, and then Ken and Al and Bobbie Joe for 10 and 7 respectively, then Jim for the last 5. Not only did I not have to run and read a map at the same time, I also had some companionship for the entire 5 hours. It was fun.

The course is very nice. Not too demanding, but enough hills to make it challenging. It's scenic in most parts, and provides a good tour of Nashville. I think this will be a race that will last. Nashville has a lot of history, as well as being "the home of country music", so it has a lot going for it.

After 9 days off since Boston, I struggled some during the last 7 or 8 miles. Nothing serious, just needed to "get back in the groove". The ole body was just getting used to rest, and here I am crankin' out 26.2 again.

It looks like the weather is going to be warm on Saturday...probably the warmest I've experienced so far this year...well, there were a couple of warmish days in Las Vegas, but they're calling for about 75 to 78 degrees here, and that's warm.

***

April 28 - Friday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 67 of 200

Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Temperature: 48 / 57
Weather Conditions: Very nice. Cloudy and cool for the first 8, then sunny and warm.
Running Time: 5:04:54

Road Finds: 10 cents

Comments: Harold and his team of runners got us/me, through another day. Some of my companions had so much fun yesterday, that they came back for more today...plus a couple of new faces.

Elite racing seems to have done a good job of creating community interest in the "new" marathon. I say this because there were a number of pedestrians, and store owners, and "everyday" people who knew that the race was happening tomorrow and had encouraging works for us. I think the fact that there will be a band at every mile will help to bring out the spectators tomorrow, and will keep them around. It feels as though we're going to have a 26.2 mile street party.

My time was a bit slower today, but that was due to a few unplanned stops to talk with "fans" and supporters.

I felt much better today than I did yesterday, and I think that is partly due to what I am now calling "the first day back syndrome". Except for last month in Boston, the first day back after my break, seems to be difficult. Maybe I need to modify my "training" routine during those few days off at the end of each month.

Tonight we are going to be guests of Larry and his running group at a nice Italian restaurant in downtown Nashville. And then get up and join in the fun of the Inaugural Country Music Marathon.

Gotta run.....Jerry Dunn

April 29 - Saturday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 68 of 200

Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Temperature: 45 / 55
Weather Conditions: Cool, overcast, a couple of showers, no wind.....great day!
Running Time: 5:30:12

Road Finds: 10 cents

Comments: Well, I think the country has another good marathon. Everything went extremely well for a first marathon. One thing that impressed me, aside from all the logistical "stuff" that needs to be in place for a smoothly run marathon, was the way the city of Nashville embraced the race. There were a lot of spectators along the course, some of them obviously using the race for a reason to get started "partying" early, but their enthusiasm was the well received by the runners.

I haven't heard yet what the winning time was, but given the near perfect weather conditions, I'm guessing about 2:12, 2:14.

Elaine ran well today, with less than 2 weeks rest since Boston, I'm very proud of her performance.

Tomorrow I drive to Cincinnati, and begin running The Pig on Monday.

Later . Jerry

But before I go.....I want to personally thank again, all the runners here in Nashville, that helped to make this experience one of the best of the year. THANK YOU!!!!!!
