Dunn’s Daily Updates (January)

January 1 - Saturday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 1 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, California. The San Diego Marathon course.
Temperature: 51 degrees
Weather Conditions: overcast brief periods of rain.
Running Time: 5:58

Road Finds: 1 cent

Comments: Elaine (my bride) ran this one with me. I wanted her to be with me as I begin this quest for the amazing accomplishment of 200 marathon distances in one year. We took our time, did a considerable amount of walking, and made a number of “pit” stops. (We also made a couple of detours, which added about ¾ of a mile to the total.)

I am so glad to finally be running! All the preparation and planning have finally brought me to this day. There is still a lot to be done as far as sponsorship, contract negotiation, finalization of sites, and 100’s of other details…….but, today, I’m running.

I have spent many anxious moments, agonizing about the “whys” and the “what ifs” and the “can I’s” of this seemingly impossible goal I’ve set out to achieve. And running one 26 miler does not answer any of those questions or anxieties, but it does mean that I am in San Diego, I am on my way, and I no longer have 200 marathons to go, I’m now in the 100’s. Even if it is 199.

January 2 - Sunday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 2 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, CA.
Temperature: 45 / 62
Weather Conditions: Nice and cool.
Running Time: 5:05

Road Finds: zip

Comments: Day two was rather uneventful but I got it Dunn.

I’m really glad to have the use of the Sprint PCS phone. I carry it with me in my fanny pack on my daily excursions, as I do in most all the marathons I run. I’ve become quite adept at talking on the run. It’s actually not much harder than walking and chewing gum, a feat, which I perfected as a young child. I use the phone to call Elaine and mom and some of my friends. These calls are designed not only to “check in” and see how things are going with the 2 important women in my life, but also as a way to wile away a mile or two. I also do some business while on the run. Sometimes the media crews assigned to do a story have trouble finding me, and they can call and I can tell them my exact location and where the best place for them to meet me would be. And sometimes I get a “brilliant” idea that needs to be communicated immediately... boom-bada-boom, dial few numbers and it’s done.

January 3 - Monday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 3 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, CA.
Temperature: 47 / 60
Weather Conditions: Cool, clear and breezy. A head wind going east and south. Nothing serious, but noticeable.
Running Time: 4:37

Road Finds: 5 cents

Comments: I had a hard time getting out of the chute this morning. Not an uncommon feeling, but I want to work on enjoying the early miles a little more. Hey, they’re the easy ones, might as well.

Physically I felt good until about 18, when I turned around and headed back up the beach. My legs were getting tired and the bottoms of my feet were a little sore. Mentally, today was a struggle. I spent entirely too much time thinking ahead. “This is only #3, I have 197 to go.” “How will I get from the finish line back to the starting line in Las Vegas next month?” “When should I start working on arrangements for Las Vegas?” “Am I going to get enough sponsorship to make this more than just a break even project?” “New York - November - can I make it that far?” I’ve got to remember to take it one day at a time. Keep my focus on short-term goals, not the whole thing. I learned many years ago to ‘break it up into small segments,’ otherwise I can get overwhelmed.

I didn’t wear a watch today, and saw no clocks while I was running. So I was rather surprised at my time when I got back to the car and saw that I had run it in a 4:37. Probably too fast for this early in the game. I will slow up tomorrow and try to bring it in at 4:54. I think I’ll run about the same pace, but throw in a few more “walk breaks”.

At 2:30 this afternoon, I met John Gastaldo, a staff photographer for the San Diego Union-Tribune, and he also does some free lance work. He was hired by A/T to get a roll of promo shots for Endurox R4. We met at Starbucks, and went down to the beach. Got some good stuff.

I introduced myself to Julie Sgroi, and Cindy Duran today. They are the General Manager and Director of Sales, here at the Ramada. They were very nice and assisted me in getting a different room. I’m now on the second floor, facing west, which means I have a better view, I get afternoon sun in my window and the freeway noise is almost non-existent. Much better.

January 4 - Tuesday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 4 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, CA. San Diego Marathon course.
Temperature: 47 / 70
Weather Conditions: Cool, clear and breezy. A head wind going east and south. Nothing serious, but noticeable.
Running Time: 4:48

Road Finds: zip

Comments: Started on time. I wore gloves for the first time, and they felt good.

I was scheduled to meet a crew from a local headline news station at 8:30 at McDonalds; they didn’t show until 8:45. The interviewer was new, and not very good. Plus I already had an “attitude” because I had to wait for them. The whole thing went OK, but it certainly could have been better.

I peeled off my long sleeve shirt at mile 9 and enjoyed the warm, relatively speaking, California sunshine. (I always feel better when I can run in shorts and a singlet or T-shirt.

As soon as I finished the run, I went to Wal-Mart and bought a blender….gotta have those smoothies in the afternoon. Then I stopped for a haircut at the Beach Shack. (It was my semi-annual shearing, but I figured I needed to look decent for the film crew tomorrow.)

An uneventful afternoon; went to bed early.

Elaine and I had “pleasant” conversation, nothing serious, but also no mention of this ruining our relationship either.

January 5 - Wednesday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 5 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, CA. San Diego Marathon course.
Temperature: 44 / 66
Weather Conditions: Clear, cool. Ideal running day.
Running Time: 4:41

Road Finds: 6 cents

Comments: Met Sumesh and Derek in the lobby at about 5:55. They drove me to the starting line, got some footage of me taking off in the dark, and then proceeded to shoot me at various locations throughout the course. Great guys, extremely easy to work with, AND, they were more than happy to shoot me at a number of establishments of prospective sponsors. I.e. McDonalds, Starbucks and Ramada Inn. They also did some close up shots of all my other sponsors gear and products, even though the primary focus was Endurox R4.

It was an added incentive to have them along today. I seemed to perform a little better than the previous two days. (I had to impress these young pups, you know……and I did.) Plus the fact that I really do think this Endurox R4 is doing it’s job. My legs didn’t “fade” on me as early today as they have in the past few days. Right after the run, we went to Von’s to get a few supplies, came back to the room and “staged” the wake up shots that we didn’t have time for this morning.

Got a call from A/T today, and I have an interview with USA TODAY tonight at 8 o’clock. Gary Graves is the reporter. I checked the paper today, and it appears his column is Sports People, which appears on page 3, bottom left. It should have a photo, which will please Endurox, and Dr. Portman.

Elaine called at 7:40 this morning, just before she left for work. I didn’t hear the phone, so when I checked messages at about 8:00, I was very happy to hear: “It’s 7:40, and I love you”.

The Ramada has a barbecue every Wednesday night…free to guests….so that’s what I’m having for dinner/supper tonight.

It’s been a good day. Now if I can only find I.U. b’ball on the tube, I’ll be in hog heaven.

January 6 - Thursday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 6 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, CA. San Diego Marathon course.
Running Time: 4:48
Temperature: 40 / 72
Weather conditions: Cool at the start, but warmed up enough before I finished so that I began to sweat….finally.

Road Finds: 25 cents

Comments: Nothing eventful happened during the run, just another day at the office. Immediately upon crossing the finish line, I jumped, well maybe collapsed is more appropriate, into the car, drove to McDonald’s to pick up my shirt and gloves, went through the drive-thru, got a bacon-egg-cheese biscuit and raced to the airport to return my car. I had determined in a phone conversation on the previous day that it would be more economical to re-rent than it would be to renew my existing contract. So I swapped the white Sunbird for a green Sunbird. From the airport I drove to the Loma Santa Fe exit and went to race headquarters to meet the race director, Lynn Flanagan. Her company is called In Motion and they put on a number of events throughout the year both in Carlsbad and in San Diego. It’s a family business, which I picked up on right away, when I heard a baby crying as I entered the building. Lynn and 3 of her daughters work together in rather relaxed environment. Like, if they want to go out for a run they just close up and go, if they want to bring the babies and the dogs to the office, they can.

She gave me an official In Training for the San Diego Marathon T-shirt, and, was kind enough to comp my entry fee. I checked to make sure that Elaine could enter on Saturday morning….if she decides to come out.

Stopped at Von’s and bought a few items and headed “home”.

January 7 - Friday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 7 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, California. The San Diego Marathon course.
Running Time: 4:38
Temperature: 40 / 68
Weather Conditions: Instant replay of yesterday

Road Finds: zip

Comments: Everything was firing today. Minimal soreness the entire run, which made for a good time, (4:38) and a good time in the sense that for the first time this week, I enjoyed the whole 26.2 miles. The Endurox R4 must be working.

When I got back to the car I called Myles and had a long talk about him helping me get the T-shirt business started. Possibly by involving some of the students at B.H. and then sharing the proceeds either with that class, or by establishing some kind of fund. He seemed interested. We’re going to meet when I get back.

After a quick shower and a few minutes of rest, I drove down to meet Don Norcross for a lunch interview. He is a staff reporter for the San Diego tribune, and also a good friend of Mark Beal. And, he is training for his first marathon in Las Vegas next month. He is an excellent interviewer, as well as an interesting man. We hit it off very well, and talked for a little over 2 hours. He took notes on a laptop, as I was talking. I have a sense that the article is going to be very good.

I came back to the hotel and basically pissed away the rest of the day watching TV and playing Free Cell. I did make a few calls and get some things line up for Sunday……a photographer from the Trib is supposed to come out Sunday or Monday, and a video crew from the ABC affiliate is supposed to come out on Sunday also.

This has been the best day of the week.

January 8 - Saturday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 8 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, California.
Running Time: 4:51
Temperature: 38 / 58
Weather Conditions: same ole, same ole……beeeutiful.

Road Finds: 10 cents

Comments: Knowing that this was the ½ way point in this segment of the journey helped me mentally today. I always seem to get a boost from knowing that all if have to do is what I’ve already done and then I’m on my home. Still felt strong physically, but at about mile 22 I began to notice some slight discomfort, (don’t want to call it pain), in my right calf. I decided not to baby it. I have iced it once already while I ate me lunch, and I will continue to ice it throughout the rest of my waking hours.

I left a bunch of messages for Elaine today. She was out doing a 26 miler at home. She’s planning to run a marathon, or marathon distance 62 times this year.

I called Bob Pfeiffer from the course today, and he was excited about the fact that he was talking with me while I was actually running. The wonders of modern science……still impress the Heartlanders.

I got really hungry during the last part of the run today. I’m going to have to see how I can keep that from happening again. Either eat more the night before or take something with me in addition to my PowerGel, or maybe, stop for a donut or bagel somewhere along the course.

January 9 - Sunday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 9 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, California. The San Diego marathon course.
Running time: 4:53
Temperature: 38 / 55
Weather conditions: Cool, sunny but with a slight haze most of the morning.

Road Finds: 1 cent

Comments: Well, I’m over the hump here in San Diego, I have fewer days to run than I have already completed. It’s nice to be on the down side of 16. That being the good news, there is a downside to the down side... I fell 2 times today. The first was of no consequence; I had just come across the bridge on Palomar and was running down hill next to the “off” ramp from Carlsbad Blvd. in the wood chips in front of the construction site of the new Hilton. I tripped on something, fell forward, landed on my water bottles, tucked right shoulder, did a little roll, got up and continued running... no problem. Then, at about mile 22, I stepped off the pavement to allow room for some cyclists, took a little “walk break” and was watching the surfers down below. Stepped in little hole, rolled my left ankle and went down. Not good. I got up and continued walking, but this time I didn’t gaze out into the ocean. I walked about a ½ mile, during which time all the “what now’s” were going through my mind. Having experienced these countless times before, I forced myself to run and was able to pretty much finish the day on schedule…..4:53 is a normal day. My faith in the goodness of humanity was once again confirmed however. No more than 3 minutes after I had fallen, while I was still walking, a couple of guys in a van, heading the other direction, asked me if I needed a ride. They said they had seem me fall and had come back to see if I was OK. Good folks here in San Diego….and everywhere I go.

So as is my routine, I got to the car, drove to McDonald’s to pick up my shirt and gloves; got a fish sandwich at the drive-thru; headed back to the hotel; put on my trunks and went to soak in the Jacuzzi. I took some ibuprofen and have been icing. About 3 this afternoon I went to the store to restock my larder and the first few minutes of walking around were pretty uncomfortable, but it got better. I bought an ankle wrap and plan to give it a go in the morning. Gotta get out there, the local ABC affiliate, and the photographer from the Trib are supposed to show up tomorrow.

My general attitude after 9 days on the road is good. I still struggle a bit each morning trying to get “psyched” for what I know is going to be another 5 hour ordeal, but once I get out the door, start the car and get to the starting line, I know I’m committed … (or soon will be; that’s a joke). I have established spots on the course that have incremental significance in the completion of the day. The first is at about a ½ mile……it’s my first walk break as I “climb up out of the valley” on Jefferson Ave. The next one is at about a mile and a ½ when I hit Carlsbad Blvd., make a left and stop at “Starbucks” for my first “pit stop”. (during the week, there are always 2 cops sitting in the same corner, drinking their morning coffee, sans doughnuts). Then I’m headed up the beach as the sun begins to work it’s magic on the clouds out over the ocean. Next checkpoint….how close am I to 50 minutes when I hit the 5-mile mark at the crest of the bridge going over the railroad tracks on Palomar? Then I look forward to my short walk break at the corner of Car Country road and ?????. Then the turn around at 7 ½ , and then I set my sights on McDonald’s at 9 ¾ where I get a small cup of coffee and do a quick strip down in the restroom, stash my long sleeved shirt and gloves in the bushes out front, and head up the hill to the Arco at 12 miles. Here I refill my water bottles, drain a little water, and look forward to the peace and quiet of the 12th mile that runs down by the Palomar Technology Park. Once I leave there, round the corner back on to Palomar and hit the 13 mile mark, I set my sights on the beach at 15 ½. Then comes the most “dreaded” part of the day, the 2-½ miles out to the turn around at La Costa. Once I get there and head “home”, it gets better. There are a couple of walk breaks, (hills) between the turnaround and mile 23, plus I’ve got the surf and the surfers to look at as I run and walk. My next goal is saying hello to the “Flower Man” just before mile 24; then checking out the late morning coffee drinkers at Starbucks, just before I make that “final turn” onto Grand and head for that brief, but much needed little hill just past 25, and then it’s all downhill from there.

Phew, just writing all that down makes me tired.

January 10 - Monday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 10 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, California. San Diego marathon course.
Running time: 4:48
Temperature: 38 / 58
Weather conditions: a repeat of yesterday. Once again, perfect running conditions.

Road finds: 2 cents and a brass nut. They say it takes leather balls to play rugby; I think it might take Brass nuts to run 200 marathons in one year.

Comments: I had very serious trepidation about running on my injured ankle. I pretty much walked all of the first two miles, until I got up to Starbucks. I then began to run slowly and actually felt pretty good. I never really experienced any serious pain, and ended up having a good run. I did wear a rather tight ACE bandage ankle wrap, which I think helped. I iced as soon as I got back to the hotel. (I’m just now remembering that I had Alieve and ibuprofen in my fanny pack, but obviously didn’t need them).

The photographer from the Trib came out at 8:45 and met me at the Texaco station at mile 15. He took some shots at about 16, some more at 16 ½, and more at 20 on my way back up the beach.

I didn’t get that hungry feeling like I did yesterday. Possibly results of feeding myself better last night, and better too, this morning.

I could sure tell it’s Monday morning……..The traffic on Palomar was once again quite abundant and LOUD.

I felt strong the entire way today. The dead leg syndrome never reared its ugly face. I’ve got to believe it’s the Endurox R4 working it’s magic; and I’m loving it. I’m very curious to see if I can get 2 days in a row without the dead legs.

January 11 - Tuesday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 11 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, CA. The San Diego marathon course.
Running time: 4:44
Temperature: 40 / 60
Weather conditions: Today there was fog early, which made for a more muted sunrise and a “softer” beginning to the day. Even though every day is pretty much a repeat of the day before, I think I could easily get used to this southern California weather.

Road Find: 4 cents.

Comments: I seem to have reached a plateau as far as how my legs and feet are responding to each days 26 miles. It’s a good place to be. I’m still getting a little weary by 23-24 miles, but not “wasted” like I was in the early days.

I did an interview with the local ABC affiliate today. It took a bit more time than I had anticipated; partly because there was only one person assigned to do both the interview and the camera work. But actually I rather enjoyed the rest.

Also the “interviewer from Hades” and her crew showed up unexpectedly and took a quick bit of “B” roll as I ran by them. I stopped then, to ask if they wanted any more, they all kind of looked at each other like, “do we?” and then said “nope”. So I just went on my merry way.

January 12 - Wednesday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 12 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, California. The San Diego marathon course.
Total Miles so far: 314.4
Running time: 4:58
Temperature:: 46/ 60
Weather conditions: very foggy early, then cloudy until about mile 16. Nice for a change. The last 10 miles were sunny and back to the beautiful California weather.

Road find: a photograph of a kid standing in front of a house.

Comments: forgot to wear my watch today, so I had to use my phone and the clock in the car as my timing device. No big deal. I got a hankering for a steak today, so after the run I went to Ralph’s supermarket and asked for one very nice filet. Wednesday night is barbecue night at the Ramada, so I asked the guy cooking the burgers and dogs if he would grill my steak…medium well. He did. It was great.

Bob Babbett called today and asked me to do a TV appearance on Saturday afternoon. It’s a marathon related special, so I of course said I would be there.

Lori Halley from New Balance called and we discussed the possibility of me being shod for the rest of the year in New Balance 1000’s. Since purchasing my 1st pair just prior to starting this segment of my adventure, and having worn them 5 of the 12 days I have run, and being extremely pleased with them, I hope this works out.

Elaine arrives in just 48 hours, and I am excited to see her. We won’t have much free time together, but I’m planning to enjoy the whole weekend.

January 13 - Thursday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 13 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, California. The San Diego marathon course.
Running time: 4:51
Temperature: 40 / 63
Weather conditions: early morning fog and clouds, burned off by 8 o’clock.

Road find: nothing today.

Comments: the USA TODAY article hit the streets today and I was pretty pumped about that. So the early miles seemed easier today. I called a lot of friends today to tell them to pick up a copy of he paper. I autographed one for the Phillippe at the McDonalds where I sop every morning for coffee. The lady at the Texaco station, did in fact get yesterday’s Trib, and had red the article. I left m shirt and gloves there today, instead of hiding them in the bushes as I normally do. When I returned later to retrieve them, I left her a copy of the USA TODAY article. The mechanics there seemed to know about the story as well.

Today was a bit of a struggle physically. It seemed as though I was doing a lot of walking, but I still finished under 5.

Elaine and I had a bit of an “emotional” dialogue about her piece of the article… well, not really the article, but the fact that she hadn’t mentioned that the reporter had called her. Plus, reading in the paper that she was going to attempt 62 marathons this year was the first I had heard about that. Touché’, I guess. I must remember that imitation IS the highest form of flattery.

Over and out.

January 14 - Friday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 14 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, CA. The San Diego marathon course.
Running time: 4:41
Temperature: 41/ 64
Weather conditions: yet another perfect day. I surely would like to live out here.

Road find: nada.

Comments: routine run. Stopped in expo after run to meet Mary from Endurox, but she wasn’t there yet. Did meet Lori from New Balance, and she agreed to get me 2 pair of 1000’s before Sunday. Went back to hotel where I showered and ate lunch. Went back to the expo at 3 and worked the booth for about 3 ½ hours. Next I wen to the Sponsors Party at Palisades resort. I met Ron from Keebler, Pat from Cliff Bar, Lynn’s husband, Bob Babbett, Ron the official announcer for the race and I also ran into Rick Neliss, the director of the Marine Corps Marathon.

From there I went down to San Diego to pick up Elaine. I was very happy to see her, and she looked wonderful. Back to the hotel and to the sack.

January 15 - Saturday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 15 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, CA. San Diego marathon course.
Running time: 4:29
Temperature: 53 /70
Weather conditions: beautiful.

Road find: 2 cents.

Comments: Elaine drove me to start line and headed back to the hotel. At a out 4 ½ miles I saw her coming toward me on the highway….my directions had told her to turn left on Grand; I should have said right turn. Plus, she was almost out of gas. I sent her ahead to the Texaco, filled up the car, drove across the to McDonald’s and had some coffee and yogurt, and I went on my merry way. We met back at the Texaco about 2 hours later, then met again at the 18 mile turnaround. Our next meeting spot was to be Starbucks at mile 24. She wasn’t there. I got the phone # for Starbucks from the cashier, and told her if she saw woman who looked like an American flag, tell her to go the expo. Elaine found me at mile 25, we talked a minute and agreed that she would drive to finish line and meet me there. About an hour later, we finally found each other. We were both mildly upset, but we got over that pretty quickly. (I was only mildly disturber, because I had vented most of my frustration talking to myself in the long minutes during which we had been looking for each other. This day’s running time actually turned out to be my fastest of the 16. Why? I’m not sure. Maybe the fun of having Elaine with me….maybe the adrenaline form the frustration of “female crew person” not being at appointed places….whatever.

In the afternoon, at 2 o’clock we did some taping for a TV show that will air next week sometime. Elaine was included in the piece. Aaron was the camera man, he was a humorous lad. Phil Stone was the “on camera” guy. He was good too. Next we went to the expo for a couple of hours…..Elaine shopped and I talked to folks about Endurox and my plans for 200 in 2000.

We then found St. Patrick’s church for Saturday night mass. We got there early and sat through the saying of the Rosary. The mass was “alive”. The music was provided by organ, guitar and 3 vocalists. The congregation were warm and welcoming. After the mass, we asked Father for a special marathon blessing….it was a good one…..and apparently it worked.

We decided to “eat in” and get to bed early.

January 16 - Sunday

200 IN 2000 Day Number: 16 of 200

Location: Carlsbad, CA. San Diego Marathon course.
Running time: 4:54
Temperature: 51 / 63
Weather Conditions: Overcast for the entire day. Periods of precipitation, ranging from a gentle mist, to light showers. It was an excellent day for running, but I prefer sunshine, and it would have been particularly nice for Elaine to have experienced the the kind of day that I had been enjoying for the last two weeks. I do think though, that the cool conditions helped us to achieve a sub-5 hour race.

Road find: 20 cents, in the form of 2 dimes.

Comments: We, Elaine and I got up at the regular time, even though the “early start” was a ½ hour later than my usual 6 AM “gun”. I was detoured by some barricades and police officers, that I wasn’t anticipating. I mean, by now I just figured I owned this course and could travel it in the same way I had for the last 15 days. Plenty of port-a-johns; no problem there. Someone shut all the flood lights off, so it was a little dark in the staging area. I got in line to buy a cup of coffee, vendor said he had no change for my $5, so I told him to just give the next 4 people in line a free cup of coffee, compliments of the Marathon Man.

We met some interesting characters at the starting line……a quiet, mild mannered 77 year old guy; Dale, an ultra-runner who introduced himself by saying: “When you’ve done this one, (pointing to his shirt that said BADWATER), I’ll shake your hand.” He knew Jim Dill and Marshall Ulrich. Ron, the announcer of the race, acknowledged Marathon Man and Mrs. South Dakota’s presence in the starting area, which was nice for Elaine to be recognized. The race itself was rather uneventful. We saw Moses a couple of times. He apparently had taken the 2 hour early start with the walkers. Elaine had a good run, and worked me pretty hard. I struggled during miles 14 through 22. Partly from tiredness, and I think also I was dealing with some subliminal sadness about this being the last day. At mile 24 ½ I flagged down one of the TV crews who needed to get some footage of me and Elaine for the story that Phil Stone was putting together. They “shot” us for the next 1 ½ miles, and of course we had to perform for the camera, to include our scheduled kiss at the 25 mile mark. We were interviewed at the finish line received our medals; walked through the tent to say good-bye to Mary and headed back to the hotel to get ready to take Elaine to the airport. We stopped in Old Town for lunch. I convinced Elaine to have a margarita, in addition to the complimentary champagne that came with the meal, and she was definitely in a celebratory mood by the time we left the restaurant.

I was very happy to have Elaine with me for the “wrap”.
